First we traced Cakes's hands as this is something she is really into at the moment. Then we gathered the ingredients (first we had to visit Coles and wait while our spill was cleaned) and tools. Cakes measured 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of salt and 1 cup of water. She poured her dry ingredients in and gave a stir then I slowly added some water while she stirred. We kept going until it was a doughy consistency (about 3/4 cup was all we needed). After a bit of Mummy stirring Cakes was all ready for some kneading. She kneaded until her poor little arms were tired, then she handed it over and played with some bottle tops while I continued. I read on another blog the longer you knead the smoother it becomes, this was not the case for me. Then Cakes rolled out a small part of the dough about half an inch thick. I then sent her off to draw while I cut out her hand with a sharp knife. This was a difficult and thankless job, but effective in the end. We put them in the oven for an hour and a half at 150 degrees Celsius. We forgot to pop a straw through the top to make the little hole and had to do this after they were half cooked, it still worked but better to do it before if you can.
After they were cooked and cooled Cakes painted them white. I took over the Santa painting colouring her thumb and the base of her palm red, the top of her palm skin colour and the fingers and between the red and skin colour, white. I am looking forward to hanging ours on the Christmas tree and boxing up the rest for presents for all of Cakes's loved ones.
