We finally got around to making bird feeders to go with our bird nest distribution centres and they were pretty easy also (apart from the mess). With a large variety of different bird feeders on Pinterest we decided to make hanging bird feeders due to the large amount of cats that frequent our yard (we are up to 9 now and that isn't including our own cat who prefers supervised time outside). We used one cup of water with twice as much gelatine specified on the gelatine bottle. Cakes mixed very warm water with the gelatine until dissolved (this was a very slow porcess though she enjoyed it). The we initially we added one cup of bird seed though as it was very moist we added a little more until it was a bit firmer. After we both had a turn at mixing I sprayed the cookie cutters (Cakes choose a circle, rectangle, teddy bear and truck as the shapes for the bird feeders. We then took turns scooping the bird seed into the cutters and added a straw at the top of each cutter and seed to allow a space for the string after it sets. We left them in the fridge for several days (as it started to get dark and we were not able to hang them outside) however a few hours would be sufficient to set the feeders. Daddy and Cakes hung them up high on Cakes's garden arch. We have seen a few birds at the feeders though they always fly away by the time I can get my camera out.

have been wanting to do this at kindy to hang in the tree. Was wondering how to make one so might give this a go. Do you think this is safe and suitable for toddlers?

Cakes did pretty well with it, however we made a very large mess with the birdseed. I would say no different to most other cooking activities. Cakes did eat a few seeds, and I am not sure if anyone might be allergic to the seeds. If you do make it please feel free to share a photo with us.
