With the new school year starting in a few weeks I have had several requests from parents of children heading into Prep, for activities to improve fine motor skills. One of Cakes' favourite activities is poking pipe cleaners into a strainer. To poke each pipe cleaner in she needs to concentrate on getting the long stick into the small hole. This is improving her hand eye coordination, small muscle development and her attention span. These are all great skills to build for prewriting. As Cakes has been using this activity for sometime now she has become more creative and creates castle and flower gardens (well they don't look like much to me but she has a great imagination).

I can see that occupying some time. Fabulous idea. You could probably do it with straws too.
