Even though our Saltdough Santas were pretty cute in the end, both Cakes and I were disappointed in the cracking that occurred and decided we needed to give making Christmas ornaments another shot. I found a super easy recipe on Pinterest for Cornflour clay and just happened to have all the ingredients in the house (after a little bit of research to find out the Australian equivalent of these Canadian ingredients). We set out in the kitchen. Cakes has always been very cautious of the stove and oven so it took a little bit of convincing to get her to come over to cook. She does however love getting a chair to stand on to check out what is happening at the bench. Once she understood that the heat was not on and we discussed how we would remain safe we got started.
The following are the steps we followed to make the clay:
The following are the steps we followed to make the clay:
- mix dry ingredients in pot
- place on low heat and slowly add all the water in
- mix continually until the mixture congeals and becomes a mass with a similar consistency of playdough (this is surprisingly easy and does not stick to the side of the pot)
- Once at the right consistency remove from pot into a bowl and cover with a wet teatowel until cooled
- When cooled roll out (using cornflour to stop sticking)
- use cutters to cut out the ornaments and a straw to pop out the string hole (we added glitter before baking though I would suggest doing this afterwards with glue)
- bake for an hour - two hours at 100 degrees Celsius, if you can turn them over (we checked ours at 20 minute intervals)
- allow to cool and decorate with paint, glitter, etc
- add some string and hang on your tree or wrap them as a gift
